Why every workplace needs a proper wellness culture.

There’s a version of “high-performing” that looks impressive from the outside and feels like quiet exhaustion on the inside. You know the person first to arrive, last to leave, always available on WhatsApp, replies to emails promptly, the best at his or her job and never quite switching off.
In a lot of Lagos workplaces, this has become the reality of 9-5ers. As a matter of fact, we’ve come to admire this. We call it dedication because everyone needs the paycheck and you would rather cover yourself in honey than get back on the “Job hunt street”. The tiredness and fatigue you experience daily and refuse to pay attention to is just burnout wearing a nice outfit
Here’s the truth: a team that never rests isn’t a strong team. It’s a tired one that hasn’t broken down yet.

The Real “Cost” of Ignoring Wellness

When wellness isn’t part of how a workplace operates, the effects show up quietly at first someone snapping at a colleague over something small, more sick days than usual, good employees updating their CVs.

Left unaddressed, it becomes something bigger; people who are physically present but mentally stressed, talented staff who leave, and a culture where stress is just the accepted cost of doing business.
None of this is inevitable. It’s a result of how work is structured and it can be restructured better.

What “Proper Wellness Culture” Actually Looks Like

A lot of companies think they’re doing wellness because they have a poster in the break room or they hosted one fitness challenge last year.
Real wellness culture is less about the announcement and more about the everyday habits underneath it. If the MD is sending emails at midnight, no wellness policy will convince the team that rest is safe. Culture follows what leadership does, not what the handbook says.

Boundaries are respected, not just written down. A lunch break that people are too anxious to take isn’t a benefit. A workload that requires working through it isn’t sustainable, no matter how many wellness days are on the calendar.

Rest is treated as productive, not lazy. The Lagos hustle culture often frames rest as wasted time. But a mind that never pauses doesn’t produce its best work it produces its most exhausted work.

Workplace Mistakes

One of the biggest shifts a workplace can make is moving wellness from “something we do when things get bad” to “something we do so things don’t get bad.” Just like the body needs regular movement and good food, it also needs regular maintenance. A chance to breathe out everything the week has built up.

This is where our steam therapy earns its place, not as a one-off treat, but as a routine. Fifteen minutes to let the body breathe can be the difference between a team that’s holding on and a team that is actually well.

Start Small and be intentional.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire company culture overnight. If you’re a business owner or team lead reading this, start with something real:

Protect the first ten minutes of your day before diving into messages.
• Actually take your lunch break away from your desk.
• Notice who on your team looks like they’re running on empty, and ask.
• Take some time to stretch and move your body.

And if you’re an individual in a workplace that hasn’t caught the rest is optional talk, you can still protect your own breathing room. Wellness culture often starts with one person who decides rest isn’t optional but intentional.

At Lasena steam bath, we believe that wellness isn’t a luxury tucked away for special occasions. It’s daily maintenance for people who give a lot of themselves. Whatever your workplace is going through, it starts with one simple decision to BREATHE.
