The Myth of I’ll Rest When It’s Finished

If you live in Lagos, you’ve probably said this a couple of times. I’ll rest after this deadline, I’ll rest after the month-end rush, I’ll rest when the children are settled, when the exams are over, when the business is stable.

And then the finish line moves.

Here’s the truth most of us don’t want to hear: in a city like ours, the work doesn’t finish. One project ends and another is already queuing behind it. If rest only begins when everything is done, rest never begins.

The finish line keeps moving

Think of the early riser who is out the door before the traffic builds, the mother running a household and a career at the same time, the entrepreneur answering customers at 11pm, the student studying on very little sleep.

None of them is waiting on a quiet week.
There isn’t one coming. So “I’ll rest when it’s finished” quietly becomes “I won’t rest,” and we call it hard work.

Rest is not a reward

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that rest has to be earned. Finish the task, then you’re allowed to breathe.

Your body doesn’t work that way. Tiredness shows up whether or not your list is done. Your focus dips, your patience thins, and small things start to feel big. Skipping rest doesn’t make you more productive. It just means you’re running the whole stretch on a low battery.

Rest inside your routine, not after it

The good news is that rest doesn’t need a free weekend or a long trip. It works best when it’s built into your week in small, regular doses.

  • A pause in the middle of the day. Ten minutes away from your phone and your screen is enough to reset your head.
  • A fixed slot for yourself. Put it in your calendar like a meeting you can’t move. **
  • A place where you can properly switch off. Somewhere the notifications can’t reach you.

This is why we talk about wellness as a routine at Lasena Natural Steam Bath, not a one-off treat. A session in a warm, natural steam room gives you a reason to be still, and a space where you can leave the noise outside. No synthetic treatments, just heat, breath and time. Pair it with one of our handcrafted body scrubs or a massage and you leave feeling like your body has been looked after, because it has.

Some of our clients tell us that even a few minutes without their phone in the steam room helps them stay focused for hours afterwards. That’s what happens when you give your mind a break it doesn’t have to negotiate for.

Stop waiting for permission

The work will still be there when you come back. That’s the part we always forget. Rest doesn’t take away from the work, it’s what lets you keep doing it well.

So don’t wait for a list that will never be empty. Decide that rest is part of the plan, and make room for it this week.

Ready to build rest into your routine? Book a session at Lasena Natural Steam Bath and give yourself the pause you keep postponing.
